Course overview

State-recognized, part-time further training according to the Regulation for the Implementation of the Nursing and Residential Quality Act (AVPfleWoqG) dated July 27, 2011 Professional Significance: In residential facilities, more than half of the residents are already affected by a dementia-related illness. Due to demographic developments and the increasing aging of the population, this group will continue to grow. Mental illnesses in older adults are often considered "normal for age," which leads to them frequently going untreated or being improperly treated, causing avoidable suffering for those affected. This issue arises from a lack of knowledge among caregivers on how to care for these elderly individuals according to their specific needs related to dementia. It is therefore necessary for a significant proportion of caregivers in these facilities to possess the required gerontopsychiatric knowledge to implement care concepts in their institutions and to pass on their knowledge to other staff members. The new curriculum for the further training "Gerontopsychiatric Care and Support" is based on an interdisciplinary approach and thus creates an essential prerequisite for the sustainable assurance of quality in care and support. This must differentiate between the predominantly monodisciplinary efforts to establish standards in the field of specialized nursing and the interdisciplinary approaches in the area of care and support for individuals reliant on care. Ensuring the quality of life for those with gerontopsychiatric illnesses is more effectively achieved through the diverse strategies of various professional groups in social support, care, and therapy. Risks of under-, over-, and mis-provision are minimized through interdisciplinary approaches based on evidence-based care and therapy. This requires the collaboration of all parties involved in the process. The foundation for this is laid in the further training.
