Course overview

1st-3rd Day: Also bookable separately as Docker and Kubernetes for Java Developers Docker Motivation for using container images Comparison of virtual machines vs. containers Terminology - Image - Registry - Container Docker Command - Load, manage, and start Docker images - Port mapping - View logs - Execute commands in the container Image Creation - Dockerfiles - Package Java/JEE application into an image - Create custom base images, e.g., for provisioned EE servers - Use multi-stage builds to optimize image size Set up and use volumes Use registries Kubernetes Motivation for orchestrating containers with Kubernetes Basic structure of the platform Declarative approach YAML files for describing Kubernetes objects Building blocks of Kubernetes - Pod - Deployment, Replica Set - Service - Volume, Volume Claim, Persistent Volume Claim, Storage Provider - NodePort, LoadBalancer, and Ingress - Namespace - Secret - Config Map - Stateful Set - Job Preparation and monitoring - Init Container - Readiness and Liveness Probe Continuous Delivery/Deployment Motivation for automation Distinction between Continuous Integration, Delivery, Deployment Overview of different approaches for deployment GitLab Docker build in container Deployment in Kubernetes cluster GitOps - Deploying Kubernetes manifests from Git - Basic approach - Overview of tools - Argo-CD as an example Deployment from pipeline Local Development General problem Developing local IDE against Kubernetes cluster - Easy provisioning of environments for local testing - Overview of tools (Skaffold, DevSpace, Telepresence, ...) - Approaches for Java (EE) applications - Capabilities of common Java IDEs The topics will be deepened with overarching exercises. Realistic examples of Java/JEE applications will be used: standalone applications, EE applications, persistence with databases. Additionally, a realistic pipeline for Continuous Delivery will be developed.
