Course overview
The course "AI in Local Government" provides fundamental and advanced knowledge about the use of Artificial Intelligence at the municipal level and is aimed at employees in cities, municipalities, and local institutions. The focus is on the application of AI to optimize administrative processes, improve municipal services, and support data-driven decisions while considering legal frameworks. At the beginning, central fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence are addressed. This includes data-driven systems, machine learning, and generative AI applications. Participants gain an understanding of how AI technologies work and how they can be applied in municipal contexts. Another focus is on specific application areas in local government. These include, among others, the automation of administrative processes, support in handling citizen inquiries, analysis of municipal data stocks, and the use of AI in areas such as urban planning, traffic control, or resource management. The goal is to identify efficiency potentials and improve administrative services in a targeted manner. Furthermore, the integration of AI into existing structures is discussed. Participants learn how to plan, implement, and organizationally anchor corresponding projects. Aspects such as interdisciplinary collaboration, process adaptation, and training needs are also taken into account. A central component of the course is the examination of legal and ethical frameworks. This includes addressing data protection requirements, transparency, traceability of decisions, and relevant regulatory provisions at the national and European levels. The aim is to use AI applications responsibly and in compliance with regulations. Additionally, opportunities and risks of AI use are reflected upon, such as data quality, potential biases, and the limits of automated decisions. Participants learn to critically evaluate AI systems and contextualize their use professionally. The course "AI in Local Government" thus imparts structured and practice-oriented competencies for the use of Artificial Intelligence in the municipal environment and supports professionals in further developing administrative processes efficiently, transparently, and with a future-oriented approach.
