Course overview

DESCRIPTION SOUND ASSISTANTS participate in the technical preparation and execution of recordings in television or sound studios, on-site during live broadcasts, or in the setup and operation of sound systems in event technology. The role of the SOUND ASSISTANT particularly involves cabling and operating microphones, mixing consoles, outboard equipment, and subsequent post-production. In ENG productions (Electronic News Gathering), the sound assistant ensures high-quality sound recording on camera using a microphone on a boom pole or with the help of lavalier microphones and a portable sound mixer. In film and television productions, the sound assistant works closely with the sound engineer and cameraman and is responsible for recording the actors' dialogues. Typically, the SOUND ASSISTANT acts as the executing boom operator and is constantly striving for optimal microphone placement and recording quality. The SOUND ASSISTANT maneuvers the microphone with the boom pole to follow the signal sources in their movements without making the microphone visible in the shot. This requires a lot of experience, and good sound assistants or boom operators are in high demand. In film, teamwork and an intuitive and quick understanding are prerequisites. Recording ONLY SOUND, such as effects and atmospheres, is also part of the SOUND ASSISTANT's responsibilities. The sound assistant also possesses the fundamental skills to edit sound recordings digitally in a DAW using a computer, apply effects, and create a sound mix. The training corresponds to the sound content of the IHK vocational profile of media designers in image and sound, supplemented by advanced audio content. In the SOUND ASSISTANT training, an individual start is possible, regardless of the mentioned start dates. This will be discussed individually with the study advisory service.
