Not having a recognised vocational qualification does not make one training path automatically right. It makes the outcome especially important. A short course can solve a clear skills gap. A longer qualification route can lead to a recognised occupational result. The useful question is which option matches the target occupation and your realistic capacity.

    Start with the target occupation

Look at current vacancies for work you can realistically enter. Note whether employers ask for a recognised qualification, a licence or demonstrable practical skills. A course should be selected because it helps meet those requirements, not because its title sounds broadly employable.

Compare short courses with recognised outcomes

A focused course may be useful when a specific tool or task is missing. A route that leads to an occupational qualification usually requires more time, practice and assessment. It may make more sense when the occupation consistently requires formal evidence. Discuss both options instead of assuming that shorter always means safer.

    Prepare your evidence

    • A current CV with all work experience
    • A small vacancy sample for the target role
    • Course curricula with entry requirements
    • A timetable that accounts for care, travel and income needs

Use the consultation to test the route

Explain the job you want, experience you already have and the evidence you still need. Ask whether the proposed outcome is appropriate for your circumstances. Do not present a voucher as guaranteed before the individual assessment has happened.
