Cloud and DevOps work is about making software systems available, reliable and repeatable. The role connects infrastructure, automation and delivery practice. It is a better fit for people who enjoy diagnosing systems and improving the path from code to a working service.

Separate the role from the title

Cloud Engineers often design and manage cloud environments. DevOps Engineers often focus on automation, delivery and reliability. Many teams combine both, so inspect the tasks in vacancies. Look for the balance of operations, scripting, platform design and developer collaboration you want to learn.

    Build the technical base

Start with Linux, networking, command line work and Git. Add a scripting language, containers and one major cloud platform. Then practise infrastructure as code and continuous delivery. Learning a cloud console without understanding networks, permissions or automation makes projects difficult to explain.

    Use labs to produce evidence

    • Deploy a small service in a cloud environment.
    • Containerise it and document the configuration.
    • Automate one repeatable infrastructure task.
    • Add monitoring and a simple recovery note.

Choose a course with real operations practice

Prefer a curriculum that includes labs, troubleshooting and written documentation. Certificates can help structure learning, but a working project that shows security choices, automation and failure handling demonstrates much more than a badge alone.
