Scrum Master or Project Manager
Career rolesBoth roles help teams make progress, but they do not own the same work. Scrum Masters support the effectiveness of an agile team and its process. Project Managers coordinate a defined initiative through plans, dependencies, risks and stakeholders. Titles can be mixed, so tasks are the best guide.
Scrum Master: enable the team
Scrum Masters facilitate events, coach ways of working and help remove process obstacles. Their contribution is often visible in better collaboration, clearer feedback loops and a team that can improve its own delivery. A strong example shows a team problem, a facilitation approach and the learning that followed.
Project Manager: coordinate delivery
Project Managers commonly own delivery visibility across timeline, scope, budget, risk and dependencies. They report to stakeholders and help make tradeoffs when plans change. Their evidence is a clear project plan and an example of keeping a complex initiative moving.
Where they overlap
Both roles need communication, conflict handling and practical judgement. In smaller companies one person may be asked to do elements of both. Check whether a vacancy expects coaching the team, owning a project plan or both before you select a course.
