AZAV certification explained (and why it matters for you)

AZAV is the Akkreditierungs- und Zulassungsverordnung Arbeitsförderung — the federal regulation that defines quality standards for labour-market training. It's audited by independent bodies (Fachkundige Stellen) accredited by the DAkkS.

There are two things that can be certified: the provider (Träger) and the individual course (Maßnahme). For funding to flow, both have to be in scope.

AZAV-certified providers must prove qualified instructors, a published curriculum, transparent pricing, fair contract terms, and measurable learner outcomes. They get re-audited every year.

In practical terms: no bait-and-switch curricula, no surprise fees, and a hard limit on the percentage of learners who drop out without an outcome. If a provider can't keep that ratio, they lose certification.

Look for the course's Maßnahmenummer — a unique ID assigned at certification. You can search for it in the federal KURSNET database run by the Agentur für Arbeit.

If a provider can't produce a Maßnahmenummer, walk away. 'AZAV-aware' or 'AZAV-conform' are not certifications — only 'AZAV-zugelassen' with a valid number is.

Even if you self-fund, picking an AZAV-certified course gives you legal protections that uncertified bootcamps don't. You can cancel within statutory windows, and the provider is liable for delivering the promised curriculum.

It's also a strong proxy for employer recognition. HR teams in regulated sectors (healthcare, finance, public sector) often filter CVs by certified training.
