Certificate, portfolio or experience for a career change
Course decisionsCareer changers rarely need one perfect signal. They need enough evidence to reduce the main question a hiring team has about them. A certificate shows structured learning. A portfolio shows applied skill. Experience shows performance in a real context. The right balance depends on the occupation.
What a certificate can show
A certificate can show that you completed a defined curriculum or assessment. It can be useful where employers recognise a specific qualification or where you need a structured foundation. It does not automatically show that you can apply the skill to an unfamiliar problem.
What a portfolio can show
A portfolio makes work visible. It is strongest in roles where the outcome can be demonstrated, such as software, data, design or marketing. Show the problem, choices, feedback and outcome. A polished result without process gives little evidence of your judgement.
What experience can show
Experience shows that you performed in a real setting with constraints, people and consequences. It can come from a project, internship, volunteering or an adjacent responsibility in your current job. Describe the actual outcome instead of simply naming the activity.
Build the smallest convincing mix
- Search target vacancies for recurring proof requirements.
- Use a certificate for structured or recognised learning.
- Use a portfolio for applied work and decisions.
- Use experience to show delivery in a real context.
